🏆 Track Championship Turns Controversial
What was supposed to be an intense but routine state championship race has turned into a legal case that’s making waves across social media. Alaila Everett, a standout athlete from I.C. Norcom High School, has been charged with assault and battery after a viral video showed Kaelen Tucker getting struck in the head with Everett’s relay baton.
Tucker suffered a concussion and a possible skull fracture as a result.
Everett, however, insists it was an accident.
“She was touching me to the point where I was pumping my arm, and the baton was hitting her arm,” Everett explained. “I lost my balance—my whole body turned, and then I pumped my arms, so she got hit.”
🎥 The Viral Video That Has Everyone Talking
Social media exploded when footage of the incident surfaced, with heated debates breaking out over whether Everett’s actions were intentional or an unfortunate in-race mishap.
The backlash has been intense, with Everett receiving harassment and even death threats.
In response, the Portsmouth NAACP released a statement defending her:
“Alaila is NOT AN ATTACKER and media headlines that allude towards that in any way is shameful… She is an honor student and a star athlete… She has carried herself with integrity both on and off the field.”
Meanwhile, Virginia Davis, a veteran USA Track and Field official, called for perspective, reminding the public that these are high school students:
“I think it’s tragic. They bumped into each other. Whether you think what they did was correct or not, they’re still high school students.”

With Everett now facing legal charges, the case is heading to court.
But beyond the legal ramifications, the situation has ignited bigger discussions about athlete safety, competition pressure, and the role of social media in shaping public perception.
As the case unfolds, questions remain: Was this truly an accident, or does Everett’s charge signal a shift in how competitive sports incidents are handled legally?
One thing is clear—this isn’t just about one race anymore.Â
What do you think? Should Alaila Everett be held accountable, or was this just a racing accident?
