Big Freedia is mourning an unimaginable loss. The New Orleans bounce music icon shared that her partner of 20 years, Devon Hurst, has passed away at the age of 38 due to complications from diabetes.
On Thursday, May 15, Big Freedia took to Instagram with a heartfelt message honoring Hurst’s life and their two-decade-long relationship.
I’m devastated to have to announce that today my partner of 20 years, Devon Hurst, passed away peacefully due to complications from diabetes, surrounded by his loving family.
Freedia, whose real name is Freddie Ross Jr., added that Hurst will be “deeply missed by everyone in this community who knew him and loved him.”
She expressed comfort in knowing Devon is now “free from any pain and suffering.”
Remembering Devon Hurst
Freedia shared that Hurst is survived by his mother, Chareen, his children Zyrielle and Davone, his siblings, and many nieces and nephews.
While asking fans for prayers and privacy during this difficult time, she said public services will be announced soon.
Devon Hurst was more than just a partner—he was Freedia’s soulmate.
In a 2023 interview, she opened up about their love story, calling it love at first sight.
“It’s our love that’s kept us together,” she said at the time.
